Artist's Comments

This image is dedicated to Nora, and forms part of the “Between Friends Gallery”. The gallery celebrates the relationship between Canada and the United States. Nora's family is a significant piece of that history.

The car is located on Nora's farm in North Dakota. Her father, a Norwegian immigrant moved from the US to Canada in 1903 where he made significant contributions. They returned to the US in 1909, soon after which Nora was born in 1912. Nora lived in a family of 11 children. She was confirmed in Deer Creek Canada (which, as a carpenter, her father helped to build). Her Uncle and Grandmother are buried in Canada in the Norwegian Cemetery across the road from land her grandfather farmed.

Nora attended school in a building that was initially located close to the border, but later was moved a mile south of the line. The church was also located in the same area as the school. It too was moved at about the same time. She remembers that children attended school from both sides of the border and she had friends in Canada that she visited regularly.

She remembers that while life was hard, it was in some ways better because they had time to go and visit people. "Relationships were a priority to the people in those days" she says. "We did not have any means of transportation, and roads were scarce, so we walked when we went places." She comments that "time was not as fast as it is now".

The international line was not as definitive as it is today. In her youth, while the line was recognized as being in place, there was no real thought given to it in terms of security, and certainly no port of entry was used. When they wanted to visit friends and family, they simply walked across.

i know! If you get a new shiny Monaro, everyones like "ooh, he's got that new car" but the attractiveness dies in 2 years and it becomes an old model, but if you get a classic, it will always be "hey, he's got that awesome comby!"
