Artist's Comments

Homesteading was a difficult way of life. Irrespective of the struggle to survive, many people moved to the 1-6 area of Manitoba in the late 1800's and early 1900's to do just that. Often life was precarious and hung on a thread. Unlike today, neighbors new one another and freely helped others in need. It was a necessity, because you never knew when you yourself would need help. Community activities that supported an agrarian lifestyle were numerous.

This cabin represents the struggle of our pioneers to live on that razor edge and to mold this land into its highly productive present. It is located on the edge of the Pembina Valley and overlooks a grand view. And while it has not fallen into disuse, and has been vandalized and abused, it still speaks of the bravery, perseverance and persistence of our pioneers, to whom we all owe a debt.

Those who risk life on the edge see vistas our arm chairs can never reveal.
