Artist's Comments

This plant, called milkweed, is the favorite food of the Monarch butterfly. The toxins from the monarch's milkweed diet make the butterfly poisonous which its total defense. As a result, neither the butterfly nor its larva need camouflage because predators stay clear, knowing that a snack will probably case more than indigestion.

This is one of a very few insects that migrate thousands of miles. Eastern populations winter in Florida, along the coast of Texas, and in Mexico, and return to the north in spring. Monarch butterflies follow the same migration patterns every year. During migration, huge numbers of butterflies can be seen gathered together and make the trees sometimes appear like they have orange leaves.

Living in Canada, we are near the end of the northern migration. Each year we ensure that our garden contains milkweed to attract this beautiful creature and give it food and a place to lay eggs.

The cycle continues.

this is the seed pod, late in the fall. It does not really give a good representation of the plant at all. When I find them, i try to harvest a few seeds of our yard. Monarchs are my faviourite butterfly. I could handle a few thousand being around, but I usually have to settle for less than a dozen all summer. Although last year we had some larvae in the yard.

I love the way it looks so silky. I've heard of milk weed, but I don't think I'd ever seen it. Thanks.
