Borderland Melody

This image continues the “Between Friends” series I began some months ago.

The fence post is situated on the border between Canada and the US. I am taking the image from the Canadian Side and looking into the US.

There is a peace and beauty in this shot that demonstrates the historical relationship of peace and harmony between our two countries.

However, the last few months have created concerns once again that the relationship is not as solid as one would hope. I have read a number of stories where Canadians are being denied entry at the US Border. In one situation, a woman was returning to her work in the US. The action of the Border Guards has effectively denied her ability to earn a living. The company she works for, is taking legal action, but as we all know these things take more time that she will have.

Another incident involved a person with HIV. The law being used, is before the senate, and was made before much, if anything was known about HIV. Hopefully it will be repealed. But the point is, that there appears to be a change at the border that concerns me. And I wish these were the only situations that I have become aware of. Unfortunately they are not.

When I began this series, I spoke about the need of the Borerlanders to stick together, and to work within their limited spheres to ensure that the relationships between our countries would remain strong and friendly. With the developments of the last number of months, I fear that it has eroded even further.

It concerns me greatly, that the US will soon require all persons entering their country to be finger printed. (In this case scanned, but the effect is the same). It is not this action in isolation that is disturbing, but rather the sum total of all actions which affect the very lives of US citizens and potentially moves them towards living in controlled police state. The image that continues to return to me again and again, is George Orwell’s book “1984”. While his dates were wrong, the picture that he created in this fiction work, appears to be coming true, not only in the US of course, but around the world.

I suppose the question we need to ask ourselves is this....Do we want to live in a world like Orwell described, or do we need to make other choices? Only history will give us the answer. But it continues to be my hope that the answer lies in friendship and relationship....not in insular actions.

At some point I would like to continue this series of images from the US side. Given the changes that are happening in the relationship, I wonder if that will be possible.

From my perspective we, as Borderlands people, are in danger of losing something of great value. It is my sincere hope, that I am wrong.

I always enjoyed the ease in crossing , no matter what part. Now they tell us we have to carry our passport...I hate what the world is coming to

Me too David,

I don't mind having a passport. ID is important, for myself, I think it is the overall direction. Individual steps concern me less than the overall impact. I truly hop that the relationship between our countries will be preserved.

Great shot! It really is a shame that there are growing tensions over the border...and I wish the Mexico border could be as peaceful as this one is now.

I certainly hope that both Canada and the US can remain in a peaceful relationship.

I have no problem with the need for paperwork at the borders. As for the necessity for scanning fingerprints to secure our borders against illegals and people crossing to do illegal things, I am for it.

I will surrender some of my freedom to keep everyone safe from the same clowns that brought us 9/11 and other bits of atrocity into this world.

Along the same lines: saw a report on Fox about an inn on the Can/Am border called the Smuggler's Inn. One of the nightly activities for guests is they can watch at night with special infrared binoculars while humans are smuggled across the border for sex trade, drugs are moved across, etc. Pretty strange, eh?

Oh, and great photo; but, aren't they all? lol

we had similar problems in Ireland, I live in the North of Ireland and for many years we had to stop before coming into the north and open our car trunk and explain where we had been etc. The terror only stopped when there was a peace agreement. Borders do not stop terror. Great pic and story to go with it. Hope it makes people think.

I had no idea about this situation. Must have missed your earlier commentary on it. What a shame! Please remember that the U.S. is a republic and not a democracy and I don't believe it represents the people in general any more. The political monster has become such a tangled mess that it's taken on a life of its own, with both parties culpable. But, I don't want to restrict anyone from entering our country and I believe many people feel the same. So, please don't judge us by the actions of our country. Many of us feel (and are) completely powerless. :sniff:

thanks Alicia,

I know that is is the case that most people do not harbour any ill will towards Canadians. I too find the situation difficult to evaluate, because the US needs to protect itself as does any country. I also feel that my country is more controlled by the Bureaucracy than the people or the politicians, and i too see and feel the helplessness. But for me, this is why I began the series, it has become my voice, my way of speaking, even in a limited circle, about the hope I have, as well as the fears. There is still a future, and it can be a good one.

thanks Jackson,

You have added a very important part to this story. The issue as you say is not the border, but rather our attitude towards one another. I too hope that enough people see the image so that they will think about it.
